With all the absolute crap that's hitting the fan and spraying all over us (the economy, the rich-white-guy bail out, Sarah Palin and her doe eyed idiocy, etc.) it's important to take time out of our never ending struggle against terror to remember why we are fighting terror. We fight because there are good things in this world that are worth preserving.
1) Often, in death, we lionize the unremarkable. Not the case with Paul Newman. People have been singing his praise for decades. His passing gives us an opportunity to once more look back on his life. Frank DeFord's commentary sums the man up beautifully.
2) There are few blogs worth reading, and fewer worth listening to, but I Guess I'm Floating is a music blog that has turned me on to some really great sounds and to which I'm grateful for the additions it has made to my life. Plus, it's written by some savvy college students who give me a quality perspective from the youth of today.
3) I'm not usually one to flog cult television, but the DVD of the entire series of Freaks and Geeks had me mewling for more. Bill Haverchuck is perhaps the greatest character ever created for television.
4) In Omaha, the city is looking at more efficient street lights. I know it's local fluff, but it highlights a trend worth celebrating: maintaining lifestyle while using less. It's a good thing.
5) From our correspondent, KH, I've been informed that it's a beautiful day outside today. A cool, sunny fall day. We're expecting a high on 70F in Omaha.
